Interviewing a midwife

Meeting with a MW for the first time in a few days. Since I've always had an OB before, I'm unsure what questions to ask. Can you ladies help me out?

Also, what kind of certifications matter?

Is the midwife in an OB's office? If so, ask the same questions you would ask of the OB. What are you hoping to get out of this pregnancy? Other than a healthy baby of course. Are you looking for a natural birth? No induction? More hands off? Continuous monitoring vs intermittent monitoring? I think answering these types of questions need to be answered first, then they will drive your questions for the midwife.

I wanted a natural birth with no US or any talk of inductions, intermittent monitoring, moving around during labor, birth ball, etc. I was able to achieve that even with a breech baby. Anywhere else, I would have had a c-section. I was happy with my result.

Thanks!

She is a homebirth MW. Really, what I want right now is to go into labor on my own. No inductions, interventions, being strapped to machines, etc. The options here for natural birth after cesarians are slim. VBAC options in general are slim. She says she specializes in VBAC and water birth (which I am also interested in).

I guess I need to know how capable she is, if that makes sense. She has been recommended to me several times, once by a midwife that is very highly respected here. I have some questions already (how late can she attend, how are transfers handled if needed, how many VBA2Cs has she attended, etc).

You may want to check on her transfer rate. Some HB midwives are quick to transfer. What kind of emergency equipment does she carry? I didn't have a HB although I had an amazing midwife in the hospital. I'm not sure what all should be asked.

Thanks! Great questions!
