Taking a newborn home
My sister had her baby today and we have an Evenflo Discovery 5 infant seat (with a base) to take her home in when she gets released. I checked each of the vehicles we might be taking the baby home in and neither appears to have LATCH. Is there anything I need to know about using a seatbelt to install the seats in the vehicle for my sister? Also, is there anything we need to know about harnessing the baby that I may have missed? I already know about getting the straps tight enough, no bulky clothing, and keeping the chest clip acutally on the chest. TIA!

Just make sure you lock the seat belt and it moves less than one inch at the belt path.

And because it's an Evenflo, the handle has to be back and you must have an inch and a half between it and the front seat.

Also, the straps need to be even with or below baby's shoulders.

Re: Taking a newborn home
Bring some receiving blankets. DD2 had a gap between her butt and where the crotch buckle comes out so I had to roll a receiving blanket and put it between her and the buckle stalk to take up the slack. It was a different seat, but it"s still a possibility. Also if baby seems small for the seat and might have slump to on side, once baby is buckled in you can roll recieving blankets and lay them to either side of baby to help cushion them.

pic of DD2 with a blanket at the crotch buckle. She was about 8 weeks here so no bolsters at the sides, but if you do that, you want them to be outside the harness, but kind of behind baby. I'll see if I can find a pic.

She's coming home today. Thanks for the advice everyone. The crotch buckle is good to go on this seat, but I never would have thought to check that before. Yet another thing I learned here on DS, I didn't know anything about carseats before coming here.

now that shes home, just make sure not to put extra head cushions or other cushions as they can be dangerous. they're not made and tested with the carseat.
