knitting question, sore index finger?

so my index finger on the left hand is really hurting from manipulating the needles and yarn (cotton makes it difficult :/). Is there something to protect the finger? or will it just callous?

Band-aid, moleskin, tape, etc.

Go to smaller needles and loosen the death grip.

OMG It's like you read my mind! I just knit my first hat yesterday and my finger is so sore, lol! :)

Do finger exercises.

Relax your grip, a LOT! Make it to the point that your stitches are nearly sloppy.
Once you finish your garment and stretch and block it, you'll never know if one stitch is a tiny bit bigger/smaller than the other.
