Bad constipation problems

I've been having BAD problems with constipation since becoming pregnant. I usually go about once a week now which is not enough. I have tried ducoset (sp?) and drink fiber everyday. Between my throwing up, nausea and constipation I have been miserable. Thursday I had not gone for a week and after dinner I was overcome with horrible pain. I couldn't handle it. I threw up and started bleeding. I was able to finally go but the cramps kept coming all night. I woke up in the middle of the night unable to lay down anymore and when I went to the bathroom I kept having "jellied" blood coming out. Nothing but that. It happened 5x and I ended up in the ER. They could not find anything but that I had burst a capillary on the wall of my uterus, I was extremely dehydrated and my heart was racing. They seem to think I have some irritable bowel issues and even mentioned Crohn's which scares me. I had no idea what it even was until I came home and looked it up. I actually have quite a few symptoms. Thankfully there has been no more blood but I am being sent to a G.I. specialist.

It has been 4 days since that incident and everyday I eat I dread because it doesn't come out... in fact I feel like I get sicker everyday. Food just disgusts me. Today it got bad again. It took me all day to be able to go (6am-7pmish) and it was torture. Pain, cramps, backache, nausea, ect. What scares me the most is if the baby could possibly be affected by all this. I am miserable and I don't know what to do. Has anyone been through this? How normal is it to be THIS miserable and this constipated and sick? :banghead: Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

Oh, and adding... Once I can go there is still pain. There is just always irritation. My stomach either feels like I've been punched and sore or it is on fire. It feels like I can literally feel everything go down every bit of the way and it is uncomfortable.

I wasn't in your level of agony, but I did have horrible constipation. Grapes helped. For stomach issues, I would suggest peppermint tea - it's been known to help when all else has failed.

Good luck!!

Water, water, water. Drink as much water as possible. Your body is extracting every bit of water and nutrients as possible from your food. So your poop gets extra dense and hard to pass.

Your urine (other than first thing in the am) should be clear or really pale yellow. If it's not drink more water.

Don't wait to go, if you have the urge go. The long the poop sits in your bowels, the more water is absorbed, the harder it gets.

Are you doing any exercise? Even walking or other low impact exercise will stimulate your your gut to make you go.

My OB said glycerine suppositories we okay to use to lube everything up, but the best cure was prevention. He said really keep hydrated.

Last pregnancy, I had some "events" that made me worry about my ability to bear a child ;), keeping hydrated has made a big difference this time.

Gummy bears. Seriously, someone recommended them and I'll be darned if it didn't do the trick. I ate a half a bag.

Natural remedies: craisins, prunes, pear juice, fresh veggie juices, coffee, aloe juice (not sure about the risk of that with pregnancy) cut out or back your breads/rice, no bananas.

Non natural: miralax

I didn't/ don't have it nearly that bad but I found that hot liquids followed by walking the dog would help, as well as a diet free of an refined carbs, sugar, and dairy (except natural yogurt). And a pear before bed was oddly effective. I also had to use miralax on a few occasions. Oh and I also go a camel bak water bottle (not the bag things... just a regular bottle) that has a bite valve on it and I drink like twice as much water as I use to. Something about the bite valve makes it addictive haha.

Thank you for all the suggestion ladies, I'm going to try ALL of them. *sigh* unfortunately the few things I can keep down are rice, bagels and bananas. Of course, huh? I'm going to have to figure out what else I can stomach I guess if that is contributing to my constipation. I am trying really hard though to just constantly sip water. After the er dehydration incident I am pretty scared of dehydration again. I was stuck alot trying to find a vein. Not a fun time. lol

Sorry you are going through this.

I would try yoga and also try to get into a squat position throughout the day.

I have even squated on the toilet or even put your feet up while sitting if you are able to get your feet up. If not try stools on the side of the toilet and place your feet on them. If squating hold on.

Re: Bad constipation problems

I had horrible constipation with my 3rd pregnancy due to zofran and limited diet. I couldn't drink water, because it was AWFUL puking back up, BUT plain liptons tea I was able to drink because it had NO flavor when I was sick. I also had to use miralax and smooth move tea, which has senna in it and isn't hugely recommended during pregnancy, but I figured NOT going was much worse. Hope it gets better for you!
