SEVERE REFLUX, PLEASE HELP.

I am writing this on behalf of my cousin. She has a 4 week'ish' old who has been battling severe reflux since birth. He has never had any breastmilk (not insinuating this is the cause, just giving all info). She has his bassinet on an incline, he hates the swing, she uses Dr. Browns bottles, Soy based formula (I suggested she switch to Enfamil A.R. until dr. appt), she can hear 'gurgling' when she lays him down and is terrified he will choke b/c his 'reflux' does not come out.

Can you help me?

my ds had terrible reflux even on 2 Rx meds
i used baby's only lactose free formula even alimentum made his reflux worse till he did choke on it- yes it is the one all that controversey was about the arsenic and rice syrup but the company has it tested and uses only us grown rice.. it was worth it and i would use it again- I have a rare thing where my milk ducts were not activated and i made less than a ounce of milk
anyway things to try
my ds slept in his carseat, nap nanny (the best till he grew out of it) then the stroller!
he never slept in his crib till it was a toddler bed!
baby wearing is good as long as he is upright like in a ergo or beco not in a sling
- swing- you have to get the kind that swing side to side not back and front that just makes the acid come up and burns
fisher price cradle/papasan swing - easy to find on craigslist!
good luck!

dd gets BM and has AWFUL reflux. we also use Dr Browns bottles, bed is inclined, burp after every ounce, keep upright, etc. she is on prevacid and it doesnt help much. fwiw we have the papasan swing and she hates it. she loves the bouncy seat though. im sleeping in the nursery bc she does, even with the incline, choke at night:( no real advice. dd is 3 months. we cant thicken her bottles 1) bc the stuff wsas recalled and 2) bc she cant suck so if its not dripping out she cant get any.

DD is 5 months and has silent reflux and while not that severe, does have issues. The gurgle sound is usually the acid in the throat. First off, I'd have your sister make sure she gets a referral to a Pediatric Gastroenterologist asap. She may have to pressure her pediatrician for this, but it's really important. The GI will do some testing and likely give some medicine.

We are still waiting for a ped GI referral to go through, we have a very slow insurance plan. DD is on Ready To Feed Alimentum because she was starting to refuse Nutramigen and powder Alimentum is pretty similar. The other formulas made her much worse, she even stopped breastfeeding, I don't know what it was with my milk because I am Soy, Dairy, Gluten, Peanuts, and Egg white Free. With this she actually is eating again and doing great. We also give her slippery elm in 2 bottles each day because it coats the throat and prevents the acid from burning it letting it heal. However, I don't know if it would be good at this point for her son, DD's is more moderate and this is mainly because DD isn't on meds yet and was screaming in pain otherwise whenever she had a reflux episode. It was a last resort and we had her formula under control already. If you sister does do this, I'd start with only one capsule in one bottle a day since her son is still young. We also mix probiotics in one bottle each day, there is no harm in doing that.

So yeah, make sure she gets a Ped GI referral asap. I'd also suggest she try some Hypo Allergenic formula starting with the powder first since it's more affordable. If it doesn't work, then try RTF Alimentum.

Outside of that, what we do is also make sure she is held up for 30 minutes after a feed. We give small frequent feeds. We also use Dr. Browns standard size bottle with Preemie flow nipples. We swaddle at naps and night since it's comforting for her too. We tried putting her to sleep on an incline, but she hated it. So she sleeps on her stomach or side.

I would get him off the soy. Some babies are reallly bothered by soy and this can cause the reflux.

Yes to all of these ideas :goodvibes:. Also, baby may need an elemental formula like Nutramigen AA, Elecare, or Neocate. My 2 older DDs were/are soy and milk protein allergic so they suffered using anything but elemental formula (even though I still nursed and pumped for them along with the formula for a few months each). My oldest also needed meds for reflux.

Re: SEVERE REFLUX, PLEASE HELP.

He probably needs a prescription. My son had reflux so bad that he was having seizures!!! A.R. formula, meds, Dr Brown bottles, A medication (forget what it was called) to keep him from getting constipated (believe it or not constipation can really make it act up bad!), and constantly massaging is stomach and back all really helped. Yes, he has had a few episodes that lead to seizures even after all this BUT it wasn't an every other day thing anymore.

The only thing that worked for my DD was Prevacid and Good Start Gentle formula. We tried EVERYTHING (Zantac, Gentlease formula, Alimentum, Nutramigen, rice cereal in her bottles), but nothing helped until she was prescribed the Prevacid Solutab and switched formulas. It's worth a shot!

Only thing that helped DS--Elecare and a high dose of Prilosec. Our ped was not as aggressive as the ped GI.

He is allergic to soy, but we didn't learn that til later.

NikkiMM, look up Sandifer Syndrome. It is a rare condition that resembles seizures but is actually different and limited to severe pain from reflux. For what it's worth. :)
