What to use to make it 'light up'?

I'm working on a robot costume for DS1 and while most of it is going to be sewn, I'm trying to make a few fun parts like a turning dial or maybe turning gears. However, he's been telling people he's going to have lights and I'm really not sure how to do that. :/ I'm thought about sewing on colored plastic slots to slip little tea lights in, but would that work?? Any ideas or advice would be helpful.

They make battery operated rope lights. I am picturing like cardboard box painted silver for yhe body. You could poke holes in the box and put the rope light inside so he would glow. Lol. I dont know...

Thank you! I've thought about the rope lights, but think it might be too long? He's only 4yo. I'm making fleece or felt squares for his front and back; almost like a sandwich board, so I could make casings, clear windows with pockets, etc. Just not sure what would be my best option. :)

You can get all shapes of glow sticks at the dollar store... sticks, bracelets, necklaces, wands, etc.

Can you insert any of those somehow into the design. Although it would be most visible at night only! :)

We have quite a few of these battery operated led lights around our house. They are circles about 3" across and you press them to light them up. The batteries last for ages(thank you LED) and they are pretty cheap. You find them where the flashlights are.

DH and I were fireflies one year. I used those "tap" lights. Just had to remember to move our lights before we sat. :)

Check the bike section of Walmart. Bike tail lights can be set to flash. Night Ize makes different color ones too. Bonus: you've got a light for his bike.

This costume uses just glow sticks/bracelets and finger LED lights! All can be found at most dollar stores.

If you are at all electrically inclined you can get a bread board from Radio shack and hooks stuff up. Not at all my cup of tea, but DH is doing it for DS's Darth Vadar costume.
