Need a substitute for shallots

A recipe I want to try requires 2 medium shallots. I read that green onion bulbs can be used as a substitute. How many green onion bulbs would be about equal with 2 medium shallots?

I always though shallots were like mild garlic or a mix between onions are garlic. Green onion bulbs are fairly small, right? Perhaps 4 bulbs and then add a little garlic?

I would probably sub 1 tbsp. of minced onion for each shallot, plus a clove of minced garlic (1 for the 2 shallots).

I agree with pp. 4 scallion whites should do it as long as they aren't big or bulbous.

However I just use regular onion. It isn't quite as refined and doesn't look as nice but it works for most things.

I've always been Nader the impression that shallots are likes milder version of red onions, so think I would just use a small red onion.
