Nursing when baby has a cold

I am just starting to get ahead of some supply issues and yesterday my dd started up with a doozy of a cold. She cannot breath out of her nose at all. Nursing has been almost impossible because she is gasping for air the whole time. Does anyone have any suggestions for nursing a baby with a bad cold? I don't want to get into a situation where she isn't getting enough fluids or one where my supply starts to suffer. She's 9 mo old.

Do you have a bulb syringe? We ran into this with DS (although it wasn't as bad as your LO sounds) and I would suction out his nose, flush it with aerosolized saline spray, then suction it out again. Repeat the last two if necessary. I'd also prop him up with my knee so he would be a little more upright while nursing. HTH!

My ds was hospitalized with what we thought was RSV (it wasn't) at 7 weeks and I had a hard time too. Do you have a nebulizer? If you do use use water in it and it will help break some of it up. If not saline and a bulb syringe. I also used baby vicks and a humidifier all the time. He would try to eat and would but it would wear him out because he would have to stop and unlatch and breathe a lot...I pumped any remaining out just to make sure my supply wouldn't go down. Hope it passes quickly.

Yes, we are using the bulb syringe constantly. We don't have a nebulizer, unfortunately. We have a humidifier going in her room. She can drink much easier out of a sippy cup right now so I may pump and let her drink from a sippy for at least a few meals to give her a break. At least that way I know she's getting a good deal of breastmilk nutrition.

Upright & vicks vapor rub. Just be patient. It might take longer to eat to breathe & eat......

It is amazing. DH didn't think it worked so he did the bulb syringe first and got nothing out of our daughter nose and Then immediately afterward I used the nose frida and literally got so much snot out.
DH and I were amazed!!! Dd was back to nursing through her cold but could finally breathe yay!

this. the nose frida is AWESOME. the bulb syringes we've had have always been useless. i've never been able to really suck anything out with them. i usually do the nose frida just a couple times a day, the first few nursing sessions, and she breathes better the whole rest of the day! sometimes if she's having trouble later on, i'll do it again, but i usually don't need to.

with ds, we didn't have one. i tried the bulb syringe, but literally nothing came out, ever. we just sort of had to muddle through. do the usual things, humidifier, steamy shower, etc. it helps to get things flowing and they'll breath easier. best is a steamy shower, followed by the nose frida. oh my word. so much snot in one tiny baby. but she was so happy afterwards and you could barely tell she had a cold the rest of that day it cleared her out so well :)

When my first was a baby, he got a really bad cold like that. His ped suggested using saline drops in conjunction with the bulb syringe. He said to put a couple drops of saline in each nostril and then give him 5 minutes or so then use the syringe. We were able to clear more out that way and he was able to breath better to nurse. Other than that, patience and time. I hope baby is already feeling better. :hugs: to both of you.

I prefer the Baby Comfy Nose as an alternative to NoseFrieda becuase you do not need filters. That thing is amazing. Bulb syringe is crap compared to these.
