just starting out...books?

What are the best books for someone just starting out? I'm pulling my 9yo out of ps today yikes! I'm kinda needing somethin to help me figure out my style and dds style. She knows she's going to be homeschooled so she's already asking for work to do lol I don't want to do a lot if busy work I want meaningful things with real life application and morals behind it. I think I want to do a math curriculum and maybe English but the rest more relaxed and fun. What is this called? Any books to help me figure out the aspects and pros and cons of each style would rock! Thanks ladies!

We really like the Easy Grammar curriculum. It only takes 15 min a day, very relaxed. We use Saxon Math because that's what their old school used and they were doing well with it. I am looking more into the Charlotte Mason approach for other subjects. We are still finding our groove too. :-)

I recommend all newbies pick up a copy of Cathy Duffy's top 101 picks.
She helps pinpoint learning styles too which is great!

We do like the Easy Grammar for English but I also picked up these for extra work:

They are very simple books, a lot like Rod and Staff which a lot of families like for English (you can actually write in these books though unlike Rod and Staff books)

Our favorites for math have been Teaching Textbooks and Math U See.

There are many great spelling programs out there as well!

I really like Cathy Duffy's website for advice when picking things for our family.

Agreed on the Cathy Duffy book. DD isn't old enough for formal homeschooling yet, but it was a fantastic overview of different programs, philosophies and approaches. It definately helped me sort out what I DON'T want to do.

I will third this recomendation, it is a great read for a homeschooling mom.

We use Math Mammoth for math, it is very affordable, almost self teaching and gives a very strong understanding of numbers and mental math.
