Wake County Schools (Raleigh area, NC)??? HELP!

Can someone PLEASE give me some insight on how they assign schools? We are relocating to Raleigh next month and I am trying to figure out their system of which school my kids will go to. I have contacted the district several times and cannot get my questions answered. I am always referred to the assignment page and enter an address (which we don't have yet) to get a list of schools. It doesn't tell me which school is closest, which school is the base school, or which school my kids might attend. It doesn't seem like you can pick a school then a house. That's what we did with our current house. And where we are right now, there is only one school for a certain boundary area, so there's NO confusion. I am so confused and frustrated and cannot get any answers. We've moving in a month and I just want to know where my kids will go to school!

I don't live in Wake County anymore, but I think those are your choices when you use the assignment page. I just put in my old address there and the first one that came up was the school I attended, the closest one to my house. You can choose to send them to a different one in the area, but you would need to provide transportation.

If there is a certain school you'd like your kids to attend, tell your realtor the school and they should only show you homes in those schools' district.

Wake County is an awesome county for education. No matter which school they attend, they should get a good education. A fews years ago it was the number one large system in the country. I'm a teacher now (in a different county) and can see the difference in the education I received vs. what kids get in other counties.

Join Triangle mommies.com those ladies will be able to help you out some. Like I said before the system doesn't know what is going on. They had 1 assignment plan that let parents choose their school now they figured out that wasn't going to work so they fired the super and now are trying to figure out what to do. The thing about Wake schools is that they want to schools to be diverse so you could live in a neighborhood where 1 neighbor goes to one school, the neighbor 2 streets over could go to another school. Its crazy. I did find this http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/addressLookup/
There isn't really an area that you can look at for one school. All assignments are based on your address. I know its crazy. You could have the realtor like up the address before hand. Just keep in mind that after the 2013-2014 school year, the board could change the assignment system again.

Sorry. I've seen parents talk about they drive by 3 different elementary schools to reach the school they were assigned too. Good luck!

Yeah, it sounds pretty crazy and it sounds like it's rather frustrating for a lot of people. I tried homeschooling for K and 1st for my oldest one and it just did not go well. We sent him to PS this year and it seems to be going well. I'm glad we decided earlier this year to send him to PS because now with the move, I am so busy with all the details of relocation that doing homeschool would have put me over the edge of insanity. Or, they just wouldn't have gotten any school done.
