Talk to me about mama's helpers / nannies

I'm talking about someone that would come to the house a few days a week while I'm here to help watch the kids so I can get stuff done.

If you've ever had one, what was your arrangement? What was pay like, considering they weren't alone with the children?

I was a mother's helper from when I was 15 until I was 17. I was paid minimum wage to start, but finished at $9 an hour (I am now 24 so this was a few years back). They also fed me breakfast and lunch. I was there 3 days a week from 8-1. I made breakfast, got the kids dressed, brushed their teeth, and entertained them while their mom did things around the house. After awhile she started leaving me with them sometimes to run errands. Once I had a car and license we would go to the zoo, park, and museum to get out of the house. I was homeschooled, so this schedule worked for me. I think a mother's helper would be great to have around if you can afford it. I still keep in touch with that family. I really enjoyed working for them!

I had a mother's helper when my twins came home from the hospital NICU. She was a former college student of mine. I paid her $12 an hour for both kids and fed her meals if we were eating while she was over. Sometimes I used the time to get things done and sometimes I used it to nap. When I went back to work to teach she would watch them at our home for the two hours I was gone. For that arrangement I paid her a monthly salary so I would not have to count fractions of hours.

Sheesh...the going rate for a babysitter for 3 kids for a WHOLE day is $20 here, lol

San Antonio shouldn't be that expensive for a Mother's helper.

ETA: I don't think it would be $20 for three kids all day cheap, though. Lol.

Location isn't everything. I'm sure there are neighborhoods in my city that you could get a sitter for $20 a day, but where I would leave my son isn't that cheap YK?
