help with sprouting...
Trying to give this a go ;) but the instructions I find vary a LOT!
I've soaked my stuff overnight, do I want to replace the water? Or just keep it damp? And do I need to add something acidic? Thanks :D |
Re: help with sprouting...
After that ovenight/8h soak, drain the water.
Put the grains into a cloth bag/wrap it in cheese cloth or even a plain clean kitchen towel. Keep it in a bowl (so it doesnt dry out quickly), cover it with a plate (shouldnt be air tight) and leave it near your stove/someplace warm. Just warm, not hot! The grains need air circulation and dampness. So keep checking every 4-6h if the bag/towel has gone dry- sprinkle water on the cloth/just wet & wring out the towel and put the grains back in it and cover. Sprinkling is easier! Canadian winter may make your sprouting take a lot longer. I would say, 3 days before you see shoots. (yeah, you'll have to keep it damp all the time) Here in India-in a VERY humid coastal city, it takes 2 days to see sprouts. In summer..just 24h after soak! And I just keep it in a steel bowl with loose lid. No sprinkling/cloth. The humid air brings everything alive! |
Re: help with sprouting...
Thanks! This morning the peas and black beans have started sprouting, yeah :D
I appreciate the help. I'm paranoid that mould will grow sitting stuff out damp :P |
Re: help with sprouting...
In your dry weather, I doubt you'll get mold on the sprouts. Its not standing in water/dampness for a week. For sprouting, think seeds in the forest. They come alive from under the leaves/top soil due to the warmth and mist of spring.

Re: help with sprouting...
I do mine in a mason jar. I put cheese cloth over the opening. I soak overnight, rinse, and twirl them out(spin the jar so they spread out) .. cover with a rag. Then rinse 2x daily till they are ready.

Thanks!

Re: help with sprouting...
I use a mason jar with a mesh screen. I soak over night. Rinse and swish and allow the jar to sit slightly tilted and upside down so that the seeds aren't sitting in any standing water. I rinse and swish twice daily until sprouts are ready. Use Non-chlorinated water.
