When are we done with boosters?

New car, doing the carseat shuffle. Ya know :)...
DS1 is 8y4m, he's 4'8"+ tall and 65#. He happily rides in a Parkway in the Odyssey. Daddy cannot get all 3 in his car for the odd trip without the van if G is in a booster. And, he carpools 2x/week and lugging a LBB is a PITA.
So, here's the question...
1. Can 8y4m, 4'8", 64# ride in the center backseat of a Ford CMAX without a booster?
2. Can the same child ride in an Explorer without a LBB 2x/week?
3. Can someone link me to guidelines/videos/pics showing how a seatbelt needs to fit a child to be safe? I have no clue on big kids' carseat guidelines.
4. What do you think about putting the newly 5yo, 42" tall, 40# in a Parkway in the secondary car? It fits him well and the strap sits flat on the shoulder, not against the neck.

My hope is to keep him in the Parkway in our primary car (he loves it) but massively simplify life by going au natural in our secondary/carpooling vehicles. I don't want that badly enough to put my child in danger, however.

Appreciate the help and expertise!

I think that at this point it is a personal choice. You child is big enough to ride without a booster, depend on how comfortable you are with it. Check that the seat belt fit across his lab correctly on the 2 vehicles.

I'll try to find a link for the 5-step test on seat belt fit. Brb.

Hope that helps :)

Besides passing the 5 step test, it is somewhat important that a kid have started puberty before riding in an adult seat belt without a booster. I'm not a biology expert, but there's some way in which a person's hipbones change during puberty that means they will be better-protected by an adult seatbelt. With "kid" hipbones, they're not quite the right shape to hold a seatbelt in place on their own, and a booster acts as artificial hipbones to help out with that.

All that said - maybe a bubblebum would work?

And to your last question, I'd be okay with the 5 year old riding in a parkway as long as he stays put and doesn't mess with the seatbelt or move out of position. That's a tall order for most 5 year olds, but some are ready.

I think a 5 year old is fine in a booster if they can pass the "booster test".

Check your state car seat laws. For example in WV a child must be 8 years old, or have reached a height of 4ft 9 in to use a reg seatbelt.

The law only determines if it is legal or not. It does not mean that it is safe.

Personally I wait until my kids are 4'9" and at least 80 pounds.
