Eli's Natural, Hospital Birth - Added link to newborn photo shoot preview! :)

My older son, Noah, came almost 2 weeks late, with miserable back labor, and I had an epidural after 9 hours of labor that wouldn't progress... I desperately wanted a natural birth this time.

On Saturday, January 12th I woke up at 5:00 during a contraction. We were suppose to be taking Noah (our 4 year old) to a big brothers/sisters class at the hospital from 10:00-12:00. I tried to go back to sleep, but the contractions were too uncomfortable and they were coming every 5 minutes. So I decided to take a bath.

I took a bath, shaved my legs, and painted my nails. Hey, either I was in labor and wanted to feel fresh OR I was going to a class at the hospital and wanted to look nice. Contractions didn't lessen in the bathtub and they continued to come every 5 minutes. Did I mention my doc was on a cruise? She was on a cruise.

I dried my hair, put on something comfy, and grabbed my knitting to pass the time. 3 hours later (at around 9:00) I went into the bedroom and told my hubs that I had been having contractions for 4 hours and I thought that Eli would arrive today. I was 39 weeks along.

So we woke up our son and I texted my l&d nurse friend to have her come and check me. She was in Dallas (about 2 hours away)! Bummer - she said go in when they are more intense and have been 3 minutes apart. We made arrangements for my son, called the grandparents, and kept timing.

By 11:00 I was having to vocalize through the contractions and they had been coming every 3 minutes for 30 minutes. We dropped Noah off at our friend's house and made our way to the hospital.

When we arrived I was at 5-6cm, fully effaced, with bulging waters. They asked for my birthing plan but I hadn't done one yet! I told them I wanted a hep lock, that I was gbs positive, and I wanted to go natural. So they wheeled me to my room.

My nurse was amazing! She offered to get me a birthing ball and made suggestions on laboring positions (this is completely different from my experience with Noah's birth). My parents came in the room around 12:30 or so, made it through 3 contractions (my mom crying) and then headed to the waiting room.

Contractions were getting more intense and I was feeling pressure. My nurse checked me to see that I was between an 8 and 9, and that if my water would break he would come. So I bounced and told my water to break, but it did not. Enter doctor who I have never met. She was so sweet, but started talking about pitocin. I said "Can I please just nurse to contract my uterus?" She was hesitant but I had another contraction so we stopped talking about that.

Pushing time. The pain was so intense that I had been crying between contractions for a while. I kept saying, "I'm just so tired" to my husband who gave his silent support (he knows not to touch me or say too much during labor). So I pushed, but not right. I had an epi last time so the pushing was a bit different. One contraction and three pushes kind of wasted.

Next contraction, I got 3 good pushes during which the doc broke my water. That was the greatest pain I had felt. I was screaming/moaning and honestly didn't think I was going to be able to do it. I asked the doc "did we start the pushing too soon?" Next contraction: 3 pushes and the head came. I was so afraid of him slipping back that I took one more breath and bared down. It was 2:06pm on 1/12/13.

When he slipped out, there was the greatest relief I have ever felt. I couldn't believe I had done that without any drugs. I couldn't believe he was here a week early (the crib wasn't even up, for Pete's sake!). All I could do was cry and say, "Thank you, God." Over and over.

They cleaned him on my chest and the doc sewed me up (2nd degree tears). When the nurse checked Eli, he was perfect in all areas of the apgar. 7lbs 11oz, 21.5" long.

I needed to pee and so I walked to the bathroom and peed. My bladder didn't work for days after I had Noah. That was no issue this time. Thank God. I put him to my chest and he nursed like a champ. It's remained that way. I didn't have to have pitocin either.

Everything has gone so wonderfully. We stayed in the hospital their minimum amount of time (24 hours after birth) and have been recovering great at home. Noah is a great big brother and DH is a natural with Eli just as he was/is with Noah. I am overwhelmed with love. This birth was completely different from my last and I am so thankful.
