Is Elderberry syrup safe during pregnancy?

I prefer homeopath over OTC drugs, and was hoping I could get a better answer than its not recommended bc lack of testing.

I'm now over due and was thinking since its this late in the game there shouldn't be any risks but I'm usually cautious abt taking anything so that's why I thought I'd ask. I also had asked my Dr. early on in pregnancy and he said he didn't recommend it.

Also if a homeopath is safe for infants shouldn't it be safe for preggo moms or breastfeeding ones???

As far as I know, elderberry syrup is safe during pregnancy. I would not hesitate to use it if I were feeling sick. I'm not an expert on herbal medicine, but I have seen experts say that it is safe.

Now this isn't directly answering your question, but herbal medicine and homeopathic medicine are not the same thing. Homeopathic remedies are so diluted that there is no detectable amount of active ingredient left, whereas herbal remedies are full of the active ingredients. At least that's how I understand it to work, but I have never looked into homeopathy much at all. I believe the dilution is one of the main reasons that homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe (and also one reason that people are so skeptical about them).

Again, I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, so if someone wants to come in and correct me, feel free. :)

Modern Alternative Mama recently had an interesting post on elderberry and some cautions, although not in regards to pregnancy. It might be good to read through it for yourself.

Wow I'm a dummy! I totally thought they were the same thing! I thought "HOME"-opath was just homemade concoctions...tested and tried by our great grand relatives instead of buying OTC meds. Haha wow.

I was wondering the same thing, except for during breastfeeding. I would suggest asking the retailer to see they know?
