Leapfrog tag
Opinions on using this as part of homeschool? I'm working on teaching my 4yo to read and he was given a tag reader and some books and flash cards for Christmas by a family member. I'm wondering if this would be a good resource to incorporate into his kindergarten lessons when we start or if it ends up being more detrimental than helpful.

Re: Leapfrog tag
We bought the phonics sets when DD was 3 1/2 (I think there are three of them) and she taught herself to read with it by the time she was 4 1/2 (with help from me) and she was just having fun playing with it. I think the Tag reader is a great resource, but don't expect it to be magic =D

Re: Leapfrog tag
Since you already have it I say try it. We have one and the kids like it. But they tend to use it to read aloud to them vs challenging themselves to learn and sound things out. It might be my fault since I don't supervise them when they use it. It is probably one of those things that work for some and not others. I wouldn't go out and buy one but since you have it use it.

Re: Leapfrog tag
I'm a former reading specialist and we are BIG Tag reader lovers at our house. I have the supplies in a basket that the kids can get out and use by themselves independently. (Ok, we actually have 4 baskets because we have enough books to warrant the use of 4 pens, but yes, we absolutely love them!)
I do BOB Books with my beginning reader for our actual reading practice and instruction, but the TAG reader is great extra practice for the kids and gives them a "reading buddy" when I can't read with them myself. :) |
Re: Leapfrog tag
My girls have a tag reader my five year old that can sound out words on her own and knows a bunch of sight words. Doesent really like it. My three year old on the other hand loves it and I think she is starting to pick up some words from it. I need to get some phonics books for it. We also have the human body discovery pack and they love it they learned quite a bit from it

Re: Leapfrog tag
We have the first set of Phonics books for ours and then other books and my DS LOVES it. We are teaching him Phonics through his school curriculum but this is great for reinforcing what he is learning and giving him practice with reading and sounding things out.
I pulled up his reading record the other day and he has read the Toy Story 3 book 106 times, so needless to say he enjoys the pen and books. |
