Wellsmommy, When I was trying to figure it out and looking at my early ultrasounds I found this link helpful. Basically it is based off the shape of a baby's skull. Male skulls tend to have more blocky chunky features like a thicker brow ridge, female skulls tend to be rounded and smoother. It isn't 100% though.
