Preemie and OT questions...

My youngest was born at 30-5 weeks. He also had to have half his lung removed at 6 weeks old. He has overcome a lot! He also has severe reflux and because of that he is always arching and stiff as a board, literally. He is on Prevacid solutabs and doesn't act like he is in pain. He also had a milk/soy allergy and is on Alimentum. He is followed by a ped GI.

He has OT through EI 1-2 times a week. He is 5 months old actual, not quite 3 months adjusted. She is wanting us to work "hard" to get him to roll and grab stuff purposefully.

I have always heard to expect development by their adjusted age. Isn't that a bit much for a not quite "3" month old to do? I have no experience in this area.

My experience with OT (DS was a 34 weeker drug baby) is that you work hard on it now so that in 6-8 weeks, he will get it. Therapy always gave us a ton of homework for DS to do 3 times a day. It was the only way he got it.

But...developmental peds told me at 4 months that he would never walk. He rides a bike and plays soccer now. It took a very aggressive OT, PT, and doing the homework a LOT, but we made it.

Hooray for having an aggressive OT!

That makes sense. Our OT actually lives in our tiny town. She comes more than she is supposed to and is great. I just thought she was expecting him to do it soon. She is also wanting us to work with sitting him up. This I can understand as he is so stuff and hates to bend. My kids call him a 2x4! LOL!! He CAN bend, he just hates it and spits up when he bends at the waist no matter how long ago he ate.

Probably she wants to work on it because he is SO stiff and she thinks it'll take awhile and wants to be proactive, but when in doubt never be afraid to ask her! ;)

I agree that she's just being proactive. She's probably working towards IFSP goals that were written with the intention to be assessed in a few months. Your DS sounds very similar to my DS. With lots of OT/PT services, he has overcome so many potential problems in just 17 months of life!
