My 2.5 year old is wandering off by himself to fall asleep and it's very weird

This is a kid who has not one day in his life wanted to fall asleep alone. He has always been held, rocked, laid down with, whatever. The last several days he has come to snuggle on the living room couch with me while I read or watch tv, which is how he normally falls asleep; then I carry him upstairs. But in the last 4-5 days he has snuggled for a few minutes then gone out to the couch in the front room, laid down with his head to the side and his bottom in the air, and fallen asleep. What!?

Nothing else about his temperament is changed and I'm sure he's fine, I'm just shocked. Anyone here have a kid who made a change like this all of their own accord?

Maybe he is coming down with something?

He does have a cold in the last couple days. Or maybe he is just getting more independence.. it's just so strange, I would never have expected this (I am getting more laundry done, however..)

Growing up and getting independent, maybe.

DD2 started doing this around 2.5yo too. When she was tired she would just go lay on the couch, pull a blanket over her, and within a minute or two she was out. She was just becoming more independent. Every couple of days she would want to be cuddled to sleep, but the days stretched out longer and longer. Now (she's 3.5) she only wants to cuddle to sleep if she's not feeling well.
