Biking During Pregnancy, Yes or No?
I'm about 20w4d and the weather here is gorgeous so I really felt like going for a bike ride. My husband and I love biking in the Spring/Summer/early Fall, we even bought a seat for our son last year. We don't do any hardcore biking, just leisurely trail rides and biking down country roads. So my question is, would you do it? When would you consider it unsafe?

Would I? Well, I did today and I am 40w2d. :)

It's a way of life here though and encouraged by midwives and doctors. I think if you are an experienced cyclist that it's no problem. Stay off of busy streets. I might skip the trails too.

I bike until my knees hit my belly or I feel too clumsy :). Usually sometime in the third tri, but we road bike. A regular bike would be more comfortable, IMO.

I did up until about thirty eight weeks. I only quit then because I was uncomfortable. I say go for it, just use common sense and listen to your body.

It looks like you're ok to bike in the first and second trimester. Just remember as you get bigger your center of gravity changes.

Which sports are not recommended?

Sports where you might have a hard fall or be thrown off-balance are not a good idea. These include horse-riding, skiing, gymnastics and waterskiing. Diving is also unsafe during pregnancy. Ball sports such as football, tennis and squash are also risky, because you may be hit in the stomach.

Most doctors and midwives recommend giving up cycling on the road after the second trimester. Even if you're an experienced cyclist, there's a danger you'll fall or be knocked off your bike. You can, however, use an exercise bike throughout pregnancy.

I'd double check with your midwife but a leisurely bike ride on a country road should be ok. Make sure your bike is in good shape and the tires are filled.

If you don't feel like you're at a risk for falling then go for it. I did spinning (pretty hard core indoor cycling) until 37 weeks (and had DS at 39 weeks with a pretty early labor and delivery). Listen to your body and enjoy!

Oh and I had been doing it as part of my exercise routine for two years prior to that- I just took it slower as I got bigger and paid attention to my heart rate.

Between my first and second I'd trained and rode in an MS150. My mw told me that I could still ide as long as I felt comfortable but that later in the second trimester and third that the seat might be rather uncomfortable or that I might have balance issues, but if I started in th first trimester I would be better at compensating for the extra weight and change in center of gravity since it would be gradual. She said to just listen to my body.

Oh, and before my first, there was a woman in my Bradley class who biked for years and continued through to the third trimester until she was just too uncomfortable. Her OB supported her andtold her it was great exercise, but just to be cautious of her balance/center of gravity changing.
