9 yo moodiness

My oldest has always had emotional issues, ever since his bio dad and I split up when he was 2. He got better for a long time, but now he seems to be having problems again. A lot of times when things don't go his way, he cries. And then a lot of times he just cries for absolutely no reason, and when I ask him what the problem is he says he doesn't know.

He got back from a baseball game a little bit ago, and he was looking upset. He had gotten hit in the chin with the ball when it bounced off the ground. OK, sure, that sucks, but it was over with. An hour later, I find him by himself all teared up. When I ask him what's wrong he says he doesn't know and that's the only answer I get. So I tell him to go take a nap since he's obviously tired or something, which ticks him off but he's lying down now.

We always try to work on having a godly attitude and they are not spoiled by any stretch. So what's the deal, is this just an attitude problem, or do you think there are real issues? TIA for any help.

it doesn't really sound like "attitude" to me - it sounds more like he doesn't really know how to handle/express his emotions other than through crying. not to say that that's unusual in any way. sort of like how some people (me) express fear/anxiety as anger.

not really sure what to suggest. maybe just working with him (when he isn't upset) on analyzing what happened in a given situation and what he thought (maybe easier to get at that how he felt, kwim). i think it's just part of growing up really.

hth,
katie

Thanks, Katie. By attitude, I didn't mean he's like, being a punk, but just a problem with having an attitude in his heart of self-centeredness or whatever. And we do discuss it at length when there's nothing going on, and he can't figure out what the problem is. :(

Well, I started him on 5-HTP yesterday and two hours later I was convinced it is a miracle drug! I think he might have issues with depression, as it seems to run in my family. But thanks for all the caring responses.
