Car Seat? 5 pt Past 40lb Question

DS is nearing 40lbs and is only 33 mo old. He is super tall for his age, just under 40 in. Right now he is in a Bolero™ Booster Car Seat by Evenflo. I know it only harnesses until 40lbs and I am not totally sure on the height limit  . So I am looking for anyone who may have more insight. I am also looking for recommendations on what seat I should switch him to next. Ideally I would like to keep him in a 5 pt harness for many years to come. Thank you in advance. :goodvibes:

ETA: I just checked it out with DS in it again (after reading the entire carseat thread) and moved the straps to the top slot. He only has about a half inch before he is too tall for the bolero.

Re: 5 pt Past 40lb Question

is he FF?
a regent would keep him harnessed to 80lbs ff
a marathon goes to 65lbs ff harnessed, i think 33lbs rf?
the safety 1st/cosco apex is another that goes to 65lbs harnessed, and is within more ppl's budget
theres others that range like the marathon/regent, like the sunshine kids radian i think its called, others im blanking on
if you decide to go a booster make sure it is a high back at that age...i had to switch 2 of mine to boosters at/before 3yrs because funds wouldn't allow for the marathon/regent which were the only choices at the time. i'd also get one with an adjustable back since he's long...my 5yo outgrew the typical booster cause she was too tall when she was 4.5 (not by the rcmd height on the seat, but by where her head sits, shes got a longer torso)

Re: 5 pt Past 40lb Question

He is FF now. I have prepared DH that we may have to spend some $, but if that is what it takes to keep him harnessed then we will do it. I am off to check those seats out. Thank you mama :goodvibes:

We have the Safety 1st Apex carseat. http://www.csnbaby.com/asp/show_deta...d=FR51-SFT1079

It can be used as a 5 pt harness until 65 lbs and then you can take the 5 pt harness out and use it as a booster to 100 lbs. It's the only one I've found that works this way. We love it and everyone we have told about it loves it.

I think this is what she's talking about??? maybe not though

the only one I know about is the Britax carseats that go pretty high in weight limits. Everyone complains about the cost of their carseats but the reason they can price them so is is bc they have no competition. They are practically the only seat that goes that high in weight limit, if Graco or anybody else would just make one in a higher limit then they would have more competition!! IMO!!!!!! :2cents:

Other than that also IMO I think they should stay in 5pt for as long as you can. There are so many sad stories of seat belts failing or kids not being restrained properly.

Re: Car Seat? 5 pt Past 40lb Question

You should measure your DS's torso height by sitting him on the floor and measuring up to his shoulders. If his shoulders are already past the top usable slots on his current seat, you should definitely look for a seat with the highest harness slots that is in your budget. It sounds like he is really tall for his age! :goodvibes:
You would definitely get the most use out of the Regent. It's the only one that harnesses to 80 lbs and it has the highest top slots (20") of all the higher weight harnessing (HWH) seats on the market, so if you have a tall kid, that is definitely the one to go with.
The Apex65 is definitely the most budget friendly, harnesses to 65 lbs and has top harness slots of 17", but you must have high seatbacks or headrests in your car to use it. It can be converted to a booster after the harness is outgrown by height or weight.
The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathlon harness to 65 lbs and all have 17" top slots. They're very nice seats, but no more growing room than the Apex.
The Sunshine Kids Radian harnesses to 65 lbs or 80 lbs, but both have the same top harness heights, so you likely won't get any more years out of the 80 than you would the 65. The top harness height on both is 18". The Radian can have installation issues in some vehicles, so it's best if you can try it out to make sure it will work in your car before you buy it.
The new Evenflo Triumph Advance, that will be available sometime later this summer will harness to 50 lbs and looks to have a pretty high top harness position, but I'm not sure of the exact height.
The Recaro Como/Signo, also not available until July/Aug/Sept, harness to 70 lbs. I can't remember the top slot height right now, but there is more info on it here: http://www.recaro.com/fileadmin/exte...oung_Seats.pdf
The RideSafer Travel Vest is another option and is available in 2 different sizes. I know of a tech that has one to use as a spare for her DD in other peoples' vehicles, but I don't know all the details on it. http://www.safetrafficsystem.com/
The SafeGuard Child Seat harnesses to 65 lbs and has 19" top slots.

Keep in mind that harness systems like the RideSafer Travel Vest and the Ride Ryte Booster Seat & Harness don't offer extra side impact protection like the other harnessed seats do.

Thank you, that really helps. DS is really tall and the height is what I fear outgrowing before the weight. He measures 15.5in from floor to shoulder sitting down. So I definitely want to get the seat with the tallest slots. Off to check all of those seats out. I drive a Ford Escape (2001) if that makes a difference in the seat recommendations.
