Super late homebirth story....(with pics)

Josiah David’s birth story (sorry, it's a tad long:goodvibes: )

On Monday, August 20, 2007, I was participating in a normal weekday activity (playing Little People on the floor with my 3 and 1 year old) when I began to feel light contractions at about 10:30 AM. I had never had this with Miriam or Elijah’s birth. Miriam started with water breaking and I awoke from a sound sleep to strong contractions with Elijah. I timed them for a while and they were coming about every 15-16 minutes and quite mild but nevertheless I called Mom and Dad to let them know that it just might be “the day”. They wrapped up some loose ends at home and got on the road right away (they’re about a 2 hour drive from us). This was a relief because Jason was on a work-related road trip to Nashville and would not be back home until 5 PM or so.

I also called our midwife Ann and she warned me not to get my hopes too high because she had often seen women have these contractions that stall out and then they become discouraged. So I carried on with the day. Mom and Dad showed up at the house mid-afternoon and we decided to go to Kroger to stock up the fridge and pantry just in case. Plus the walking could only help me get things going. While in the grocery store at around 6 PM the contractions became stronger but still between 10 and 15 minutes apart so I wasn’t too concerned.

We all prepared supper and kept an eye on the clock to see if the contractions were getting any closer. Soon they were coming about 7 minutes apart with the occasional 3 minutes apart sprinkled in here and there. I decided to call Ann again to let her know that I believed this to be the “real deal”. She asked me if I wanted her to come yet and I told her that we would wait until they were about 5 minutes apart so that she wouldn’t have to sit around our house for hours. In the meantime, Jason, my Mom and Dad set to work filling the birthing pool. Despite turning up the level on the hot water heater days prior, it still did not get the pool warm enough. So they began boiling huge pots of water on the stove to get the water to a comfortable temperature. Dad turned on the classical music station on the TV in the other room because Mom was concerned that there ought to be relaxing music. I just spent my time pacing around the bedroom and resting on my left side through the contractions. For some reason I always feel the need to breathe and wiggle my legs through a contraction even though it’s contrary to everything you read about in the birth books. This was all happening at about 9 PM.

By 10:20 PM I finally had two contractions in a row that were under 5 minutes apart so Jason called Ann. While he was telling her to come on over, I had two contractions that were barely over 2 minutes apart…and that’s where they stayed. Suddenly we went from having all the time in the world to having to scramble because this little guy was coming quickly. I had planned to get in the pool by the time we were down to the 5 minute spacing but now I didn’t want to do anything to speed him along at all because Ann lives about a 25 minute drive from us. My only real concern which made me want to hold off was that his cord may be wrapped around his neck as was the case with our other children.

Ten minutes later my body began to push our little guy. I told Jason this and he said, “Stop pushing.” I told him that I wasn’t doing it. He jumped on the phone to let Ann know that things were going incredibly fast now. She told him she was driving well over the speed limit and would be about another 15 minutes. I rolled over on the bed to place my bottom up in the air to allow for gravity to keep the baby from coming and it did help somewhat. But two contractions later my water broke and I knew it wouldn’t be long until we would meet our son. By this time Jason and my Dad were out at the road waiting to wave Ann in and help her carry in her equipment.

At about 10:51 PM, Ann came rushing into our bedroom and told me, “I’m here.”
I immediately climbed into the pool and the warm water felt wonderful. I relaxed for a moment then with the next contraction my body pushed his head out, followed quickly by the rest of his body. At 10:56 PM, Josiah David joined our family officially. The water seemed to make the birth go so smoothly.

My Mom was in the room for the birth and my Dad called out from the living room, “I hear a baby.” Once I was decent, he was able to come in the room to see his newest grandson. After I had a chance to try nursing, deliver the placenta, and take a few pictures, I was ready to get out of the pool and up onto the bed to rest with our little guy. Jason cut the cord and held Josiah while Ann’s assistant, Elsie, helped me towel off and get into bed. Then he handed our son to my Mom and for the first time she was able to hold one of our newborn babies. They had always lived too far away before to see our babies when they were this young. Jason then woke up our 3.5 year old daughter and brought her into the room to meet the “baby brother” that she had been talking to through my belly for the past several months. She was in awe of him as she looked at him and talked to him. While Jason and Dad emptied the birth pool, Ann borrowed Josiah to check him over. He was just as healthy as can be, weighing 8 lbs. 3 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches long. By shortly after 1 AM, Ann and Elsie were packed up, and we all went to bed for a good night’s rest.

It was a wonderful experience for us to give birth to our son in the comfort and privacy of our home. I did love the experience of having our son come into the world in the water. It was such a smooth transition for him and I believe it helped me to recover much more quickly. I had absolutely no tearing or even the slightest bit of soreness following Josiah’s birth. Obviously things didn’t exactly go as I had planned but all along we had prayed that we would be able to have a healthy baby born with no complications in our home. God, in his grace, certainly provided that for us.
