I have a cold and my ear hurts and the doc. won't give me anything. Please help!

I went into the ER yesterday w/typical cold/allergy symptoms. Runny nose, sneezing and sore throat and my right ear hurt. The doctor said it was allergies and all he could give me was Benadryl b/c I am pregnant. I told him I had been taking Benadryl and it hasn't done any good. Well, this morning I can't sleep b/c my left ear hurts so bad. The pain is awful. He said my right ear had fluid in it but that it wasn't an infection...yet, so no antibiotics were needed. I'm going to go back in a couple of hours when I take DD to daycare and hopefully I'll get a different doctor that can help me this morning. I was just wondering if anyone had any helpful suggestions. This Benadryl isn't doing crap for me and I feel as though I'm getting worse. Also, I find it very odd that the doc. said it was allergies when I made it perfectly clear that DH and DD were both sick. DH went into sick call (military) to get his medicine, and DD is starting to get better w/the over the counter medication I've been giving her. I am the only one not getting better. DH is much much better this morning. I just feel like no one cares b/c I'm preg. They just say "oh there is nothing stronger then Benadryl" I'm not a doc. so I don't know if that's true or not. I do know it's odd that all three of us came down w/ "allergies" at the same time :headscratch: Please help w/any suggestions.

I took Zyrtec (prescription allergy med) through a good part of my pregnancy, and had not one single problem with it. To me, benadryl is kinda like tylenol, in that it doesn't do squat for me. I would definitely talk to a different doc. You could try some similisan drops in your ear to at least ease the pain.

Though this wont neccesarily heal your ear, cut a big onion in half, microwave it for about a minute, wrap some paper towel around it, and put it cut side over your sore ear... it will stay warm for quite awhile, and the onion vapors have antibiotic qualities.. if anything, it's just very soothing.

Putting a few drops of garlic oil in there will help some too, and running a hair dryer in there has been said to work as well.

I was told by my midwife during my first pg that I can take plain sudafed (you have to get it now from the pharmacy- do not get the kind that is out- it is different).
It is a decongestant and will reduce the pressure in your ear- works like a charm!

zyrtec for allergies, seudaphed (the real stuff behind the pharmacy counter), and I have been on antibiotics for 6 weeks...think I might need to be on them even longer since I'm prone to sinus infections and I get at least 3 when I'm pregnant. Try sleeping sitting up as much as possible and on the ear that is not hurting. I know what you mean about some people thinking just because your pregnant that its okay for you to be misserable!:hugs: Have you talked to your OB or midwife instead of just an ER dr? Your own dr. would prob. be more invested in helping you find some relief.

Sudafed is a no-no now. It was OK when I was pregnant with my son, but my OB said it is now not reccomended for pregnancy. The list they gave me has Zyrtec, Claritin and Benadryl for allergies.

I would call your OB/Midwife and see what they suggest.

Scroll down and it says colds and coughs on the left hand side. It says not to take decongestants because of the possibility of it raising your blood pressure. There are decongestants for people with high blood pressure- I wonder if those would be okay? I've taken sudafed 3 times in the last week- the only think I noticed was slight dehydration that I think it caused.

If you are breastfeeding put a drop or two in your ear. I know it sounds crazy but it works. Try the tea throat coat, it helps the throat but it also helps with cold symptoms and it is safe during prego....
