HELP! I have to give my three year old a suppository!

My son Hayden just had the second of a series of surgeries on Thursday monring. He did fine all day Thursday and Friday, and then yesterday afternoon he strted vomiting non-stop. He hasn't pooped since his surgery and he throws up every time he sits up (even clear liquids.)

Other than the vomiting and consitpation- he is fine. No fever or anything. I called the surgeon that performed his operation, as well as his pediatrician and they both recommeded a glycerin suppository to help with the constipation (which also may be a reason he is vomiting.)

HOW THE HE** do you give a three year old a suppository? I am trying to prepare him, and I already told him that his butt has to take medicine. :giggle: He thinks that's funny, but I have a feeling that it will be no laughing matter when it comes time to put it in.

Any tips? Should I have him laying down or something? Ahhh! I am so nervous to do this to my poor baby!

HELP!!!

Wow. Tough one. I would do it before a bath. Have him lay on his side, probably... insert it.. and put him in a warm tub. The relaxation effect of the tub is supposed to help wonders.

I read that too, but he can't be in the tub yet (his surgery was on his boy parts...)

Oh, this sucks.

Ouch, no fun. It should be pretty quick to do though. When we've had to do it with our ds, we lay him on his back, have him pull his legs up to his chest and just slide it in. It's not fun, but it hasn't been horribly traumatic for him or anything.

Hope he's feeling better soon

Have him lay either on his side, or with his knees tucked under him bootie in the air. The latter is how we did it when we had to give my oldest son enemas for severe constipation when he was 3. It was not pleasant but we all survived and suppositories aren't as bad as enemas. You might put a towel under him just in case and make sure it is in far enough or it might just pop right back out.
