What are teething necklaces all about?

I keep reading about teething necklaces.. I haven't a clue why they are used exactly? I've seen pics of kids with them on, but they look too short to chew on.. do they stretch? Don't you worry about them breaking and them choking on the beads? They look pretty tight on the neck, I'd be scared of them getting strangled.. Andrew has a mouthful of teeth so I know he's too old for one now, but should we have another kiddo, it would be nice to be informed on this..

What I've read is that amber contains a substance called succinic acid. When amber is warmed by contact with the skin, this stuff soaks in through the skin and has a pain relieving & healing affect. :)

They are not intended for the mouth at ALL (which is why most of them are too short for the child to even attempt it).

Ahhh, now it's making some sense.. I was trying to figure out how they could reach to the mouth.. I see.. So, do you all take them off while they sleep, or leave them on 24/7?

We took ours off for sleep when he was a little baby, but now that he can move around easily (and we co-sleep) we leave it on 24/7.

There are a bunch of safety precautions that go into making them, the beads are really tiny so that if one comes off and the kid puts it in thier mouth, it would require at least a pincher grasp, and also be small enough to swallow without being a choking hazard. Of course, it's not recommended that the babies eat the amber, but if ONE happens to go down, it would be ok.

They are also made with a tiny knot in between each peice of amber so that if the necklace should break the beads won't all fall off like a broken string of pearls, but rather just one peice will fall off, where the break occurs.

They are made with a flimsy plastic clasp so that if the necklace were to catch on something, it would break before the baby would potentially be strangled.

And like the pp's said, they're supposed to be short enough that they can't get them in thier mouths.

Caleb wears his so often now that he doesn't even realize it's there anymore so he never touches or plays with it at all.

I will also say that they are very VERY affective at helping with teething (and growing pains for older kids!)

Okay, I'm intrigued. Any recommendations for where to buy these?

We leave Avery's on all the time, even for sleep. We didn't use one when he was really little, but we would have taken off for sleeping in the beginning.

Thanks! My LO isn't teething yet, but it'd be good to have one for when she starts. :goodvibes:
