Anyone have a child with scoliosis?

I took my kids for their yearly physical and the dr was very concerned with my 15yo sons back and curvature of his spine. He said the reason one of his ribs sticks way out, is due to this curvature. I am peeved at our old dr because he told us 2 yrs in a row that 'It's just the way he's made, he's FINE'.. So, this dr had me take him for a series of xrays and they called me yesterday saying he does indeed have significant scoliosis and will likely have to be in a brace and have referred him to an orthopedic specialist for next week. I just don't really know what to expect with this.. anyone have a child with this same problem?

Well, I don't have a child with Scoloiosis that we know of yet, but I was dianosed with it when I was 16. What really ticked me off is I told my doctor about my rib sticking out when I was 12 and they did nothing! So when I was 16 they finally did an xray and found I had a 50 degree C curve from T6-L2. By that time I was "skeletally mature" and had to have a major surgery! I didn't get the option to have a brace or anything. I really hope that the brace will work for your son! What I didn't know was that the rib sticking out is actually caused from the spine twisting as well as curving! That is why they have to do surgery for higher degree curves because your spine can actually twist so much that it can affect your heart. We're talking very serious curving though! I'm available to talk about anything else you want to know!

My dh has scoliosis. It went undiagnosed until he was in college, and was having back issues. His sister had it, but they caught hers early because they check girls.

I will be surprised if at least one of my kids doesn't have it. Most of them also have his fallen arches as well.

Oh boy.. I hope we don't have to do any kind of surgery!!! She said he'd likely need to be braced.. and he just turned 15 in May, and being male I'm thinking they continue growing until 18ish? Hopefully we can keep it from getting worse anyways.. his left rib pokes out there.. I thought possibly from the car wreck in 2003 maybe his rib was broken and no one noticed and it healed funky? Then with the old ped said it's just he way he's made (not to mention he laughed at me like I was looking for problems?!).. I just finally let it go and now look where we are.. GRR! I really need to learn to stand up for myself and if a dr doesn't listen and take me seriously, FIND ANOTHER ONE!
Thank you for sharing.. I have no idea what his percentage of curvature is, I will ask next week though..

Re: Anyone have a child with scoliosis?

I was diagnosed at 16 also, but with insufficiently severe scoliosis and kyphosis to warrant surgery. And they'd said I was fine at the school scoliosis screening every two years before that. <f>

The doctor gave me a shoe lift to wear, and I was supposed to wear shoes all the time. Didn't -- HATE shoes! -- and that was probably a good thing, because that would have just aggravated the curve. Idiot doctor. I worked for a chiropractor in my late 20s and he was actually able to reverse some of the curvature -- very unusual at that late age, but since I was there every day....

I was also given exercises as a teenager, and didn't do them. Didn't see any reason to. My back didn't hurt..... But tell your son that I've had significant pain/weakness and lots of headaches from early 20s to now (38), and chiropractors say that's why. And a brother with scoliosis and kyphosis has a bad case of "turtle neck" in his 40s. So it's not just a matter of how your son feels now. He really is in a position now to make a lifelong difference in his posture (= looks. Think girls!) and health.

I also was diagnosed when I was 13. My curve isn't too bad, my biggest problem is that my spine sorta rotated? and then curves. Anyways my Dr.'s never did anything.:headscratch: I have some back problems now as an adult. Maybe if they would have done something, my back wouldn't hurt now. I will never know.

Good Luck.

Re: Anyone have a child with scoliosis?

Looking back I'm glad I did have the surgery though! My Orthopedic surgeon said I could have it then (at 16) or from the way my curve was heading it would increase about 1-2 percent a year and I would have to have the surgery later in life. I did not want to end up with back problems later in life! I also was in no pain, which made going into surgery hard!

It's a good thing your son is a boy b/c the brace they made me where after has a hole for your chest and trust me it is not flattering!!:giggle2: Also it's my left rib that sticks out too! I know it will be hard to have to wear a brace when everyone else isn't. Is he in highschool? Although if I had the option I would certainly have choosen the brace over surgery. Oh my gosh, does it feel good to take that thing off though!

There are lots of good websites and information on Scoliosis, maybe you can get him hooked up with a Scoliosis group in your area. That way he won't feel like he's the only one with a brace. I think they start to be more serios about Scoliosis when the curve is above 46 percent or something like that.

I hope everything works out:mrgreen:

Not to scare you at all!

My 14 yr old nice had major surgury for severe scoliosis. A brace would not of worked for her they said. Her spine was bent 12 degrees at the top and 13 degrees at the bottom She has a rod in her back but she is amazing! She recovered in record time and feels great! They are very glad she ad the surgery because they said the way hers if left untreated it would effect her lungs and heart. Before she was diagnosed she ran track.

Good Luck! I hope everything works out!

My dd has scoliosis. Hers is the kind where the back curves inward at the base of the spine. The same kind her daddy has. I asked about it at her 2 year WBC and the dr confirmed what I thought...then ordered xrays to make sure that the vertebrae were not compressed. I'm told she will begin physical therapy when she is 3, which is coming up soon!

My brother had the brace, and he has such nice posture now. It worked great. My mom tried to avoid putting me through the "torture" of having the brace, so she didn't make me do it. I wish now I would have. I have back problems now. Its terrible. I'm not even that bad wither.
