Anyone with a reflux baby/toddler??
Just wondering if there were many out there with a baby/toddler with reflux. Jackson has had some major issues with reflux since he was born and at 15 months we are still having a lot of problems. He is on Prevacid....we started on Zantac and then tried something else and this is the only thing that touches it. He still spends a lot of his days screaming/fussy and naps no longer then 45 minutes at a time and wakes screaming from naps and all night (we cosleep). Guess I am just curious to see if anyone is in or has been in this boat. I am thinking of pushing for some testing, we see his Pedi GI tomorrow. I thought by almost 16 months we still wouldn't be where we are, with no real answers.

My son was diagnosed w/reflux & we were put on zantac for it. We were supposed to get all these tests done but I didn't want to do them b/c I got scared about some of the things they said they had to do (I'm over protective mommy). Anyway, we did an elimination diet & once we cut out all dairy & soy it went away completely... and I mean all... it's in places you wouldn't think of. I'm not sure if it's something you've already considered.

Danae had bad reflux when she was a smaller baby, she was put o reglan and it ended up going away on its own.
the tests the peds do scare me, when she got reflux and we were being told about it, the test with putting the tube down the throat to the stomach really scared me since theyll put the baby under anes.
ask your dr about reglan and i hope your baby feels better soon **BigHugs**

Re: Anyone with a reflux baby/toddler??
My DS had reflux, but we were fortunate as he outgrew his by 10 mos. I have horrific reflux. I have been through various combinations of medications some work for a while, some don't work at all, some work in combination with others. Testing didn't tell them anything new, just confirmed that I had reflux. I would ask if there are other medications or combinations that can be tried.

I was on prevacid for a while long ago. that stopped working for me and I was put on protonix. that worked for a few years, and then not as well. Shortly after my son was born, I was put on acifex which worked for a year and a half, and when it no longer was working as well, they were able to increase my dose.

Point being, there are things that can be done, and chances are if he is in this much pain, he does not just have reflux, but may also have a condition where his stomach actually produces too much acid... You may want to ask if this is a possibility.

I hope your DS feels better soon!! Good luck mama!

Re: Anyone with a reflux baby/toddler??
Thanks guys for your responses.

CottonMama- I am reading labels on EVERYTHING and have cut out all dairy and soy and it makes a huge difference in his poop problems and puking....but still the reflux is there.

I think now that he is almost 16 months old I may push for a scope to make sure something else isn't going on. It scares me to death but it isn't fair for him to be in pain so much either. We go see his specialist tomorrow morning and I am not fond of this guy as he told me last time that cosleeping was the worst thing I could ever do for him and that he needed to CIO for a few hours....GRRRR too bad he is the ONLY Pedi GI in town and I made an appt. for one at Children's Hospital an hour away and they have FOUR months waiting i have no choice.

Hey Meagan!! Fancy meeting you here. Do you need me to answer this thread since you already know our issues? LOl. Glad to see ya! I do agree though, that now that his reflux is still going strong at his age, I would push for some testing. HUGS!

Re: Anyone with a reflux baby/toddler??
OK, I think I am a reflux expert by now! My dd is 2.5 yrs old and was diagnosed at 5 days old. Her reflux is still going strong. She has been on about 5 different meds, I did the elimination diet while bf'ing, we tried soy formula, food allergy testing, stool samples, 2 scopes, 4 hospitalizations, peidasure, syringe feeding, oral aversions, feeding therapy, falling off growth chart, stopped breathing while sleeping, etc.

I had to actually stop bf'ing my dd at 5.5 months old even though I eliminated SOOO much from my diet. She just couldn't handle it. Her reflux was severe when she was younger and her esophagus actually started bleeding from my milk. I felt so bad.

The sleepless nights and awful screaming/crying are the hardest. Hang in there! If you need advice about tests or anything, just let me know. Here are 2 great websites for info & advice. They have message boards too: and :hugs:

My ds has reflux too. He is 2 and a half and it is unlikely that he will outgrow it at this point. It sounds like your dc is still having alot of pain and probably needs a medication adjustment. Reflux meds are weight sensitive, they need to be increased as they gain weight. My ds is on 30mg of prevacid solutab. That is an adult dose. Babies and toddlers metabolize it differently and can tolerate higher doses.

Re: Anyone with a reflux baby/toddler??
My boy's had it really bad and outgrew it at 18 months. Their Dr. told me that it can take some babies until 18 months to outgrow it and sure enough that is how long it took. If it was me, I would hold off a couple more months before I had tubes etc... run down his throat.

Re: Anyone with a reflux baby/toddler??
DD is 9 months 1 day old, she is still very started to get better until they put her on some antibiotics. She has never been on meds for it and I've tried elimination diet in myself and nothing helps. They think the antibiotics did some damage and they want to do a scope but I'm afraid to! Gonna keep talking w/the ped to try to figure something out.
