Why wooden toys?

This is what dh asked me when I started eyeballing some wooden toys for our dd and tbh, I wasn't sure. I know that plastic ones aren't great because of the concern of her constantly chewing on plastic, but why are wooden ones better? Wouldn't they, in essense, not be environmentally concious, either??

Re: Why wooden toys?

I think there was a thread about this in OT a while back.

I dont mind my DD having plastic toys as long as they arent ridiculous, KWIM?

But, with that said I know some (myself included) are a little iffy about the crap that is put into plastic that is a concern especially since they are put in the mouth a LOT! But, then again its pretty hard to be COMPLETELY plastic free.

Sorry I'm not much help LOL

Re: environmentally conscious wooden toys.

I don't know much about other brands of wooden toys, but I know that HABA is a very environmentally conscious company. They use every scrap & speck of wood for their toys & the wood that isn't suitable for making toys is use to heat the factory in the winter! Even the sawdust is used for fuel to heat the homes of local residents.

HABA wood is kiln-dried & here is a link to why that's better for the environment: http://www.loghome.net/kuhns1.htm

HTH!
