Amonia Smell
Please bear with me...I'm still a little new to cding. I am also sure this question has been asked before. Sorry!

I have opened my diaper pail before to a serious amonia smell that just about takes your breath away! :yuck: This morning when I changed ds's diaper, it smelled like amonia. It was a contour but I'm not sure what it is made out of?!? So, anyway, what is causing this and how do I get rid of it?

Also, how to I keep my diaper pail from smelling like amonia?

Thanks sooooo much!
Lori :hugs:

Re: Amonia Smell
Sorry I don't have much help for you, Lori--This same exact thing has been happening to me!:yuck:
I've heard that it could be due to detergent build-up on the dipes. That you might need to wash them through with oxybaby or a good detergent for dipes and rinse a bunch of times until there are no bubbles.
So what is the best detergent to use?? I've heard Sun... Is liquid or powder better? Any others?
I'm interested to hear what the more experienced mama's have to say!

Re: Amonia Smell
Do your diapers have any build-up?? What kind of detergent are you using?

I would try stripping your diapers and inserts (if you use pockets) if you haven't already. Usually that's the problem. Also, you can boil hemp, and prefolds, etc. to get rid of extra build-up/smell.

I use Sun deterget and the Sun version of Oxyclean (to help strip inserts). I have had awesome luck with that.

Re: Amonia Smell
Do they smell like amonia before they go in the pail? If not, it's probably just cause they're sitting in a closed pail. Try leaving the lid off. I have an open top pail (don't worry, it doesn't stink up the room), and the only amonia smell I get is when I dump the pail into the washer or when my dipes have build up and need stripping.

Re: Amonia Smell
Ok, maybe try Baking Soda in the pail? When you wash your dipes, etc,
make sure you use only 1/4 to 1/2 the amt of detargent you would use for any other clothing, do not use Fabric softner.

Use vinegar in your wash/rinse too. This softens the dipes as well as take care of smell...

Hope this helps! God Bless & good luck!
