Used pumps

Can you use a used one? I know some you cant because of the design with filters and such milk come into contact with, I notice this just dumps the milk right into a bottle so if everything is boiled it should be ok right?

I think it's fine and I would/have done it. Some people don't though because it freaks them out. And I know what your talking about, there is a certain kind of pump that your not suppose to reuse because it doesn't have a closed system, I think its the medela pis.

You can transfer milk accidentally through the tubing which would get into the motor, but only in small amounts if at all. I have purchased and sold several pumps both used and with new parts.
I personally would only buy a used pump like a Double Select, Pump In Style, etc with a seperate motor housing. Then you can replace the tubing and cones with new sterile ones and you don't really have to worry about it.

They suggest buying new cones and tubing but it should be fine for the pump you're talking about.
I would probably replace at least my own tubing if we have another child just because they've been sitting. They (the tubing) do collect condensation when working so I would think it would be best to start with new regardless of who used it before.
I would def use a used one though. I was going to use my friend's that she was done with but my insurance covered a pump that we picked up from the hosp when ds was born so we went with that one and she sold hers.

I would/have also used a used PIS. I don't see how it can hurt, especially if you sanitize all the parts or buy new ones. I don't get too freaked out about things like that though. I feel like it just a way for Medula to sell more of them. LOL

I bought a used Pump in Style and the lactation specialist at the hosp. where I give birth was able to provide the stuff (new tubing, etc.) at very low cost. She was all for a used pump.

I bought a purely yours used, and did not replace any of the parts, I just sterlized them. They do sell a hygenic kit though, that has all the replacement parts for anything that touches milk.

I have a Playtex embrace that is a closed pump! I could be presuaded to sell for the right price! Nothing wrong with it at all! I love the pump, but ds won't take a bottle if his life depended on it! LOL
