Painted mural in childs room ?

If you painted a mural in your childs room how did you go about doing it? Did you sketch it out on paper then on the wall? Did you just start painting on the wall? What was the process involved?

Also what kind of paints did you use?

My son's room (well it isn't his now but it will be when he is 1 year old) is the largest bedroom in the house. I want him to share it with any siblings that he may have (I figure I could fit 3 children in the room easily and that is how many children we want ultimately... though we will always go back for any totcycles that we have). We are planning on priming the walls (as they REALLY need it) but I don't know what I should do after that. :headscratch:

Should I pencil in what I want or should I use something other then a pencil? Do I use "tester paints" or do I use art paints?

I am so confused! All I know is how I want it to look when I am done!

Re: Painted mural in childs room ?

I did a Dr. Seuss mural for my son's room before he was born. My wife borrowed an overhead projector from her school and I made transparencies of the images i wanted to use. I then projected the images on the walls and painted them in. For most images (that needed a strong outline), I outlined in marker, and then painted them in. Oh, and I did the base colors first, obviously. Here's some pics of how some of it came out (note that these were taken before he was born 3+ years ago):

As for paint, I used a no-VOC base in the green and blue and then (i think) acrylic paints from the craft store for the mural images. Priming and painting over it when we sell will be a challenge, but it's been worth it.

I borrowed my classroom overhead as well...

We put it on the wall in pencil and then paint it in with acrylics.

My friend did one from Pottery Barn, it is the whole room, as a castle, on the big wall there's a balcony and it looks like you are looking over the countryside. It's gorgeous.
These are good too. and they are having a huge sale.
