I know very few 4 month olds who really show the classic signs of readiness: the tongue thrust reflex is gone, the baby will start trying to grab food off your plate with a pincer grasp and more than just sucking and exploring with their mouths, the babe will start trying to chew with its gums.

What I do see in some families is mother's viewing solids as a milestone and wanting to rush. Getting food shoveled into your mouth is not an accomplishment. Grabbing food off a plate and putting it in your own mouth... that's something to record in the baby book!
