Unless it's latex, foam mattresses/toppers will off-gas a lot of chemicals. I would also worry about baby getting too warm, sinking in, etc.

If you want to take it off the bed, the topper will be a lot easier to store if you stuff it into a vacuum bag and suck the air out of it.
