I think what happens is that when they get older they drink more at one time, but then go longer between feedings. So as an example here is what DS did

For 8 hours at daycare
4 months to about 6 months - three 4 oz bottles~ 12 oz
7 months to a year -two 6 oz bottles plus baby food~ 12 oz

I liked the bigger bottles since I felt like it was easier to spill when you have 5 ounces in a 5 oz bottle rather than in the 9 oz bottles.
