Honestly, unless you can find an electric grain mill for free and start buying bulk wheat berries, you don't save much money baking 100% whole wheat bread from scratch. You save some - maybe fifty cents per loaf - and you have to decide whether your time is worth more than that. If you were buying $4.59/loaf 7 grain sprouted bread that never goes on sale, it would be a different story, but $2/loaf is a good price.
A bread machine that bakes horizontal loaves and a dynamite recipe may make the product so enjoyable that you don't mind the minimal savings.
