I say, before you even get pregnant, start emailing midwifes and see if you find one that you like, and that both of you vibe on the same page!
I spoke with a few midwives, and I did not vibe with ANY of them! They were nice, but we just didn't have chemistry, if you KWIM?
I stayed at my OB's office, but started seeing a midwife in the office. OMG...I basically got a mommy crush on her! She was so down to earth, actually LISTENED to me during my appts, didn't press ANY testing on me, I just simply LOVE her!
She actually called me the other day to just to check on me. DD is now 6 months, and I've never had my ob's call me that far after birth to say hello!

So, check around. If you don't find one that you like, then look into going UA! I bought my doppler online for dirt cheap and it works/ed awesome! You can pee sticks online, rent a blood pressure machine....just trust your gut!
