I've sewn on my husband's patches for his cammies but had to use colored thread. I just dove right in, it wasn't difficult.

I have used clear threads with no problem. It's similar enough to regular thread. Try using some adhesive spray (quilting section) to keep the patches in place while you sew. It would be easier than pins I think. Depending on how thick your patches are you may need a needle for leather or something similar - I'm sure their is a correct name.

And, lastly, hand the other moms a sewing needle and thread, they can help still by sewing by hand. Lol.
