Roving is a generic term applied to pretty much any prepped fiber. Top is combed, batts are carded. Most of what we see for diapering especially is combed top. Top generally lends itself better to worsted spinning and batts work better for woolen spinning, and woolen is loftier, warmer, but not as durable so less good for longies
