I match the thread to the patch where possible. When not possible, grey tends to blend in fairly well. Another alternative to gluing the patch in place while sewing is to tape it in place using masking tape. The tape pulls off very easily after sewing.
Final tip - use a fairly long stitch and make sure to overlap the start and end stitching several stitches to keep it well secured but also able to reasonably easily remove later.

Thanks Do you use a straight stitch or zig zag? Also do you match bobbin thread to vest color?
