Iron them on first. I know it doesn't hold but it will long enough to sew. Otherwise they shift too much. If you can't iron them on (fun patches for the back), staple first. It helps when sewing. Then I just find matching thread and sew around the outer edge. The worst ones to sew are the fun patches since they are usually odd shape. I usually just tack those down in 5-6 places instead of sewing them down completely.
For their bridging patches, do not iron them down. Staple and sew. Reason you have to remove them for the next level. There are others that carry from level to level but that is not until juniors.
