This was my solution.....I started using teacher created guides to popular books. They have everything: vocabulary, comprehension, writing, tests, extras. So they have to read to be able to do the fun assignments. Very hands on, recipes, crafts, research.....my kids are reading Heidi, Holes, and Our Only May Amelia right now. Once I started this, no one complains anymore. The website has a list of books. I let them choose what they want to read.
