I've never heard of it. Maybe it's a 'northern thang'. My DH's family is Catholic, too. Looks like fun, but this is not the year to add more gifts to the mix (even if it is $1 bin stuff). My MIL and I have even called a no gift truce. I would ask for my dad and mom & stepdad to as well, but I am an only child don't have siblings giving them gifts. I would feel like they aren't getting anything if I didn't get them something.
