Food dyes that are mixed tend to separate. An option that you could test is to hit it hard and fast, ie. pop the pH (add more vinegar to the yarn soak) and heat the dye mixture so that when it goes on the yarn it is hot.

I mostly use acid dyes, so food color dyeing and koolaid dyeing are not typically what I play with.
