If you sell it for scrap, cut the catalytic converter off first. You can get money for it if scrapped separately because of the materials used in it, hence the high price to fix it. You could donate it to a college or highschool for a project car as a tax write off, or see if they could fix it. I am so glad my dh is a mechanic If you aee even remotely mechanically inclined, I agree with a PP , do it yourelf....
