I don't consider it to be whoring my daughter out to the consumerist machine if I put a bow in her hair. I let my kids wear whatever they want for the most part, and most things they are allowed to get dirty.
My daughter has dresses and hand-me-downs from my son, so she's got a good mix of clothes. Know what? At 18 months she picks the girls clothes to wear most days. Heck, my son even has pink sunglasses and likes to put on a tutu every once in a while.
When both kids were too little to pick their own clothes, I'd dress them both fancy (when I actually got them out of their sleeper). I liked it, they didn't care as long as I fed them. Everyone was happy.
