I don't think they are a necessity, but having a few regular & "nice" tops are a good idea. I found that if we were out at a nice restaurant, I was more comfy feeding Claire if my midriff wasn't exposed (as it would be in a regular shirt pulled up). Also, nursing tanks are a good option, but I sometimes found the clasps to be stiff and hard to undo w/ one hand.
