Maybe it's the air, along with the old food. I tried freezing my wedding cake. I even put it in about 5 freezer bags (but didn't get all the air out...), and it STILL tasted like freezer. This was a year later, but still, FIVE bags??

I've tried baking soda too. I probably have old stuff in there. I just hate throwing stuff out if there's "nothing wrong with it."
