Claritin is a joke. My dd has allergies and the allergist says benadryl for attacks and zyrtec as a maintenance drug (if one is needed everyday).

The basic rule for dosing benadryl is 0.5 mg per pound of body weight. One teaspoon is 12.5mg. So a 25 pound child would receive a teaspoon. Benadryl is safe if given correctly. But it can make the child sleepy or REALLY hyper. Some children react that way to it. But if it were my child i would be doing the benadryl every 4-6 hours until they went away.
