UCers, What about AFTER the birth??

There's alot of talk for how to prepare, what to do during, but what about AFTER? how would you notice a problem in NB? Where would you go to have that problem looked at? If you went to the hospital, would they want to keep you or would they let you go home?

I'm also curious about this, and hemorraghe or something else with the mother. How would you control it?

I'm not UCing, but we are homebirthing and I'm always wondering what I'd do if my midwife didn't make it in time and I was bleeding too much etc.

Kim, I know at the hospital I work at, if you ooops and deliver at home or on the way to the hospital, and still GO to the hospital, they keep you.

I'm thinking respiratory distress in infants is similar to adults, with the one exception that infants only nose breathe.

Most midwives carry something for PP hem - generally an IM injection of pitocin is given.

And there's a herbal preparation called shepards purse that helps with preventing hemorrhage. But MW carry pitocin and will pack your uterus if need be. Also a small piece of placenta stops hemorrhage.

Oh my. From the inside? Like with gauze?

and what do you do with the placenta? eat it? I hear a retained placenta can cause issues too, if it tears and a piece is left behind.

I think HB is wonderful, and wish we had better access to simpler birth options (as American/Canadians) but UC is scary for me Many women obviously do it with no issues, but I sometimes hurt myself getting the mail. Nothing goes according to my plans!

UC is definitely not for everyone. The women that do UC normally educate themselves and are very prepared for complications though. If something arises that they are unprepared for or can not handle themselves they transfer to the hospital.

Homebirth with a midwife is different and it's the midwives that are prepared for the emergency situations. In the event of an emergency that the midwife can not treat at home she will simply transfer mother and baby to the hospital. Midwives are equipped to handle a large variety of things though.

In extreme bleeding yeah it can be packed with guaze. Usually pitocin and outside massage will stop it. Yes, you cut a small part of the placenta and eat it or hold it under your tongue.

After birth, watch baby for problems w/ respiration, labored breathing, blue hands and/or feet. Watch for pooping and peeing. If there is a problem we would go to the hospital. I would not have myself admitted.

Bleeding I have sheperd's purse on hand and also cytotec for a PPH.
